Old Time Ship Models
Unlike most hobbies, ship model making requires few expensive tools.
Almost every household, no matter how small, harbors the beginnings of a fine model maker's tool kit.
The rest can be made,improvised, and bought as the work progresses.
Most important of all tools to the maker of ship models is his knife.
It may be anything from an inexpensive pocketknife to a high-grade wood carver's tool.
Price and handle style are unimportant as long as its blade is keen and has the quality of taking and holding an edge.
Naturally some simplification over the methods adopted by highly skilled professionals is essential, but, if the methods described are carefully followed in a common-sense way, there is no reason why the results should not in every case be highly gratifying.
In conclusion, a word on the thorny subject of accuracy in detail: much has been said and written on what was and was not done hundreds of years ago, suffice it to say that, at the best, the contemporary evidence is meager, much of doubtful authenticity; nor is every old drawing or print necessarily correct in every detail.
The Author has therefore endeavored to utilize what appears to be the most reliable and probable detail, and leaves it to others more skilled and experienced to determine the correctness and precise dates of individual features, hoping that he will be tenderly treated by those competent to criticise, who may perhaps be reminded that the book is an attempt to explain how to make old ship models, by one who has had many years' practical experience.
The methods described may not be the best, they certainly are not the only ways, but incontrovertibly they are practical ways; a statement that is substantiated by the three models which are specially dealt with in this book. These were made from the instructions in this book by amateurs with little previous experience, and it is their efforts that largely form the subject of the numerous photographic reproductions of the work in progress.

I read an article from the Seattle Times this week about a Quiznos franchise that struggled for several weeks just to stay afloat after the owners disappeared. The manager and three employees stayed on with no pay in an attempt to salvage this sinking ship. Things got really bad when food vendors would no longer deliver on credit so the loyal employees were forced to pick up supplies, such as deli meat, from the local grocery store. See Article Here
Stories like this are not typical of franchise models, but, of course, nothing is completely flawless. Franchises are the hottest business model today because they provide a proven system and product that tend to produce very high rates of success. The downside typically comes from the high start-up fees. A typical brick and mortar franchise can run between $430,000 and $750,000 with the majority going to pay for the building, equipment, and supplies. Forty percent of this cost has to come from your own (non-borrowed) funds.
Not all franchises today are brick and mortar businesses, however. In fact, there are many service franchises that can be run from your home. Entrepreneur Magazine has released it's spring title of “Be Your Own Boss: 231 Low-Cost Businesses You Can Start Today!” It's packed with several franchises options that range from $2,200 to $50,000 in startup costs and require small ongoing royalty fees that average under 10%. Painting is a most important matter and is carried out from time to time as is most convenient.
One of the most difficult items in cardboard modelling is to determine the exact shape of each piece of card; they cannot be ascertained directly from an ordinary picture or photographic reproduction, but only from a specially prepared design which must show the hull lines, a profile or sheer plan, a deck plan, and sundry other details, particularly cross sections at each bulkhead, or where one deck rises above another.
From such drawings the shapes of the various parts can be determined, and then the pieces can be cut to shape and assembled. It is practically impossible to determine the shapes for the parts by the trial and error method: it is imperative to make proper drawings and work accurately to them.
The Ark Royal here described has been designed in this way, and the various pieces needed for its construction have been determined and are reproduced full size on plate No. 2. If this plate is flattened and carefully pasted on to 3-ply Bristol board or thin white cardboard, then all that is necessary is to cut the various pieces to shape and assemble them in proper order.
Novices will find this procedure is a great help, a completely satisfactory result being certain.
