Old Time Ship Models
Unlike most hobbies, ship model making requires few expensive tools.
Almost every household, no matter how small, harbors the beginnings of a fine model maker's tool kit.
The rest can be made,improvised, and bought as the work progresses.
Most important of all tools to the maker of ship models is his knife.
It may be anything from an inexpensive pocketknife to a high-grade wood carver's tool.
Price and handle style are unimportant as long as its blade is keen and has the quality of taking and holding an edge.
Naturally some simplification over the methods adopted by highly skilled professionals is essential, but, if the methods described are carefully followed in a common-sense way, there is no reason why the results should not in every case be highly gratifying.
In conclusion, a word on the thorny subject of accuracy in detail: much has been said and written on what was and was not done hundreds of years ago, suffice it to say that, at the best, the contemporary evidence is meager, much of doubtful authenticity; nor is every old drawing or print necessarily correct in every detail.
The Author has therefore endeavored to utilize what appears to be the most reliable and probable detail, and leaves it to others more skilled and experienced to determine the correctness and precise dates of individual features, hoping that he will be tenderly treated by those competent to criticise, who may perhaps be reminded that the book is an attempt to explain how to make old ship models, by one who has had many years' practical experience.
The methods described may not be the best, they certainly are not the only ways, but incontrovertibly they are practical ways; a statement that is substantiated by the three models which are specially dealt with in this book. These were made from the instructions in this book by amateurs with little previous experience, and it is their efforts that largely form the subject of the numerous photographic reproductions of the work in progress.

Freedom and liberty are definitely on the march at Royal Caribbean. The cruise line is starting to roll out its Freedom family of ships, including the Liberty of the Seas, which will set sail in May 2007. To call this ship massive is a bit like calling Shaq above average in height. The Liberty of the Seas has a whopping 14 decks and comfortably houses the population of a small town, 4,375 passengers. A ship this size would not be my thing, but I'm sure it will feature some nice bargain trips to the Caribbean so keep an eye on this space for future deals.

As regards materials, much can be done with good grade cardboard of different thicknesses; "Bristol board" is highly desirable, it costs a little more than other kinds but is well worth the extra outlay.
For masts and spars, the round-sectioned wood ranging from 1/16 in. diameter upwards and known variously as "dowel rod," "ash sticks," or curtain rod is most useful; it can generally be had from ironmongers and from dealers in fretwork supplies.
For many small pieces a prepared timber sold as "strip wood" is invaluable, being made in various sizes from about ⅛ by ¼ in. to 1 by ¼ in. and in square sections up to 1 in. square.
Good yellow pine is the best for laminated hulls and for decks, although some makers prefer white holly or sycamore for decks as the color is rather better.
Mahogany is extensively serviceable for deck erections, but is not in such good style as oak which was the material chiefly used on old ships. Oak, ash and cedar are the best materials for a rib and plank hull, that being one which is made up of separate parts in the same way as the original.
Of the metals, brass sheet strip and wire are indispensable for the smaller fittings, while zinc can often be used with good effect as its natural color somewhat resembles that of iron.
Plaster-of-Paris, gesso, and plastic wood are other materials that are very useful on some of the elaborately modeled parts, while for figure-heads ivory or bone is quite a useful material, supplies being derived at small cost from the handles of disused tooth brushes.
Sewing cotton, thread, silk, human hair, horsehair and finely plaited lines of all kinds are necessary for the rigging; white silk, voile and papers are employed for the sails.
On small models, little brown beads can often be used in a very effective way to represent the blocks used on real ships. In short, any convenient and homely material can be pressed into service if it is suitable.
